Christopher Nolan’s Next Film: A Grand Adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’
Christopher Nolan Embarks on a Mythic Journey with ‘The Odyssey’
Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan is set to follow up his Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer with a cinematic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, Universal Pictures announced on Monday.

A Groundbreaking IMAX Spectacle
While details about the film remain under wraps, Universal teased that it will be a “mythic action epic shot across the globe using groundbreaking IMAX technology.” This marks the first time that Homer’s legendary tale will be presented on IMAX film screens, an innovation that aligns with Nolan’s long-standing passion for large-format filmmaking.
The director has championed IMAX technology since The Dark Knight and has committed to shooting his last three films exclusively with high-resolution, large-format film cameras. For Oppenheimer, Nolan and his team even developed the first-ever black-and-white IMAX film stock. Although specifics on the new technology being used for The Odyssey remain undisclosed, Nolan confirmed that he and IMAX engineers are conducting intensive testing to push the boundaries of cinematic innovation.
“They have an incredible engineering team, truly brilliant minds doing extraordinary work,” Nolan told The Associated Press earlier this month. “It’s amazing to see advancements still happening in the world of celluloid film, and at the highest level possible.”
Nolan’s Second Collaboration with Universal
This marks Nolan’s second project with Universal Pictures, following the massive success of Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide and secured him his first Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Since then, speculation about his next project has been rampant, with numerous rumors about casting and plot—none of which had been confirmed until now.
Casting and Production Updates
While various reports suggest that several A-list actors are in talks for roles in The Odyssey, Universal has yet to make an official announcement. Given the scale of this adaptation, the film is expected to feature a star-studded ensemble cast to bring Homer’s epic tale to life.
As production gears up for what promises to be one of the most ambitious films of Nolan’s career, audiences eagerly await further details on how he will reimagine this timeless story for the big screen.
Stay tuned for more updates on The Odyssey as Christopher Nolan continues to push the limits of cinematic storytelling and visual spectacle.
