The HEARTS Act, a bill championed by Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, has officially been signed into law by President Joe Biden. This landmark legislation aims to enhance heart health awareness and provide schools with crucial resources such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), CPR and AED training, and comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans.
Damar Hamlin’s Advocacy for Heart Health
Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the field during a “Monday Night Football” game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023, has since become a leading advocate for heart health education and accessibility. His terrifying experience ignited a mission to ensure communities nationwide have access to AEDs and lifesaving medical training.
Congress Passes the HEARTS Act with Unanimous Support
Earlier this month, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the HEARTS Act, following its passage in the House of Representatives in September. The bipartisan bill provides federal grants to schools, allowing them to purchase AEDs and implement CPR training programs, ultimately strengthening emergency preparedness in educational institutions.
Hamlin worked closely with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), with additional support from the NFL’s Smart Hearts Coalition and the American Heart Association.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Hamlin said after the Senate passed the bill, per ESPN. “Huge shoutout to Senator Schumer, the Smart Hearts Coalition, the American Heart Association, and my Chasing M’s Foundation. This is about building a legacy—not just on the field, but off it as well.”
A Commitment to Lifesaving Care
Hamlin has consistently emphasized the importance of accessible emergency medical care, drawing from his own experience to advocate for widespread implementation of cardiac health resources.
“I truly believe that every single person deserves the same level of care that saved my life,” Hamlin stated during an event announcing the bill’s Senate vote. “This is about giving kids the chance to chase their dreams without fear. We’re making history and shaping the future.”
A Remarkable Comeback
Beyond his advocacy work, Hamlin has also made a triumphant return to professional football. After recovering from his near-fatal incident, he rejoined the Buffalo Bills in October 2023 and is now a starting player for the 12-3 playoff-bound team.
The passage of the HEARTS Act marks a significant step forward in public health and safety, ensuring that schools and communities nationwide are better prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. Thanks to Hamlin’s dedication and the collaboration of key organizations, countless lives may be saved in the years to come.
