David Letterman at 77 Declares Retirement a “Myth” and “Nonsense”

David Letterman, the legendary former late-night host, isn’t ready to fade into the background just yet. At 77, the comedic icon is proving that passion and creativity don’t have an expiration date.
“Retirement Is a Myth”
In an interview with GQ, Letterman shared his thoughts on retirement and why he refuses to fully step away from work. When asked if he considers himself “semi-retired,” he offered a blunt response:
“Retirement is a myth. Retirement is nonsense. You won’t retire. The human mechanism will not allow you to retire.”
Challenged with the notion that many people do, in fact, retire, Letterman humorously retorted,
“But what do they do? Sit there and wait for… what’s the name of that show? ‘Judge Judy’ to come on?”
For Letterman, staying healthy and active means staying productive.
“As long as you are healthy, you still want to produce. Once I stopped doing the show, it took me a couple of years to figure out this is a completely different rhythm. Without the rhythm you’re accustomed to, it’s largely unsatisfying. So, you’ve got to find something that’s important to you.”
A New Chapter: Netflix and Beyond
Letterman has found new ways to channel his creativity. His Netflix series, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” has become a platform for in-depth conversations with high-profile guests like Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian, and Miley Cyrus.
While he enjoys this new venture, he admitted to GQ,
“I’m surprised that I’m still doing it at my age. On the other hand, I still get a kick out of what we’re doing. So what does that mean? I don’t know.”
Reflecting on “The Late Show”
Letterman stepped down as host of “The Late Show” in 2015 after a remarkable 22-year run. In 2023, he returned as a guest on what is now “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” marking a nostalgic moment for fans.
Even after years in the spotlight, David Letterman’s drive to create and connect with audiences remains undiminished. For him, retirement isn’t an option—it’s simply not in his DNA.
