Denver Schools Under Investigation for Handling of All-Gender Restrooms
The Department of Education has launched an investigation into Denver Public Schools. A girls’ restroom at East High School was converted into an all-gender bathroom. However, the boys’ restroom on the same floor remained unchanged.
Civil Rights Concerns
The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is reviewing the decision. Alleged discrimination has been cited as the reason. Officials claim that female students were denied equal restroom facilities.
Craig Trainor, Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, stated:
“The alarming report suggests a violation of the civil rights of female students. Under President Trump, OCR will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. This matter will be fully investigated.”
Potential Title IX Violation
Title IX regulations require schools to provide comparable facilities for both sexes. Schools receiving federal funds must follow these guidelines. The district may be in violation if equal facilities are not maintained.
A formal letter was sent to Denver Public Schools. The department will request data and interviews with personnel. Further action will be determined after the review.
School District’s Response
Denver Public Schools has defended the decision. The restroom conversion was led by students. Officials say it was meant to promote inclusivity.
Scott Pribble, district spokesperson, explained:
“This space was created to ensure all students feel welcome. Leadership and empowerment played a role in this decision.”
The new restroom has 12-foot partitions. These were installed for privacy. Officials believe this meets the needs of all students.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation will determine if federal laws were broken. The school district has been contacted for further comments. Updates will follow as more details emerge.
