Grammys Remove J-Kwon’s Songwriter Credit from Shaboozey’s Hit ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’

The Recording Academy has officially withdrawn J-Kwon’s eligibility as a songwriter for Shaboozey’s chart-topping country-rap single, “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”
Details on the Decision
The 2025 Song of the Year nominee features an interpolation of J-Kwon’s iconic 2004 hip-hop track, “Tipsy.” Initially, the song credited J-Kwon, along with Joe Kent and Mark Williams, as songwriters. However, the Academy announced on Thursday that Jerrell C. Jones (J-Kwon’s legal name), Kent, and Williams will no longer be considered songwriters under Grammy rules for sampled or interpolated material.
Instead, their contributions make them eligible for a certificate of recognition if the track wins at the Grammy Awards on February 1, 2025.
Representatives for both J-Kwon and Shaboozey have not yet commented on the update.
Success of “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”
The fusion of country and rap has propelled “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” to incredible heights, with the track dominating the Billboard Hot 100 for a record-breaking 19 weeks. This achievement places it alongside Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” as one of the longest-running chart-toppers in Billboard history.
Shaboozey, whose real name is Collins Obinna Chibueze, earned five Grammy nominations this year, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and the prestigious Song of the Year. His innovative blend of country and rap also earned him a Best New Artist nomination following the release of his third album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going.
Shaboozey further cemented his position in the music world through collaborations with Beyoncé on her country-inspired album Cowboy Carter. Their track, “Spaghetti,” is up for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
