Nissan hands-free driving tech Nissan has clarified that Level 3 hands-free driving tech won’t be available in its North American lineup anytime soon. Despite having the capability, the automaker is focusing its resources on refining its Level 2 autonomous driving technology instead.

Why Nissan Is Holding Back on Level 3

According to Nissan’s corporate vice president for research and autonomous driving, Kazuhiro Doi, the technology for Level 3 exists. However, consumer demand remains low.

Market Hesitation: Consumers have shown little interest in paying extra for advanced driverless tech.
Cost Concerns: Nissan is waiting for semiconductor prices to drop, making Level 3 driving systems more affordable.

Current Hands-Free Driving Technologies Offered by Nissan

Since its 2016 launch, Nissan’s ProPilot Assist has been offered on many vehicles, including the Rogue and Leaf. This Level 2 system provides:

Future Developments

Nissan’s Robotaxi Fleet In Japan, Nissan is developing Level 4 autonomy with its fleet of robotaxis while delaying Level 3 autonomy for consumers. Testing in Yokohama features Nissan Serena minivans equipped with:

6 Lidar Sensors

These taxis are designed to address the growing shortage of drivers, especially in cities and rural areas. Nissan plans to expand this fleet and commercialize its ride-hailing service by 2027.
