Pershore to Transition to Two-Tier Education System by 2027
The Worcestershire County Council has announced plans to phase out the middle school system in Pershore, transitioning to a two-tier education system. Starting in September 2027, students in the area will attend primary school until age 11 and then move directly to secondary school, marking a significant shift in the local educational structure.
Historically, Pershore has followed a three-tier school system, where children began their education in first schools at age four, attended middle schools from age nine, and then progressed to high school at age 12. With the new changes, the first schools will expand to primary schools, and middle schools will no longer admit students into Year 5 starting in September 2025.
Streamlining Education for a Smoother Transition
David Chambers, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for education, described the shift as a major step forward for the local education system. He emphasized that this move was based on feedback from headteachers, governors, and parents who expressed a desire for a smoother transition between school phases. “We are very happy to facilitate this transition, as it aligns with what schools and parents want for their children,” Chambers stated.
The new system aims to create a clearer and more streamlined educational journey for students in Pershore, ensuring that every child experiences a transparent and consistent path through their schooling years.
Changes to Begin in 2025
The changes will start taking effect in 2025, when first schools in the area will begin expanding to include Year 5 students, and then Year 6 the following year. By 2027, Pershore High School will expand its intake to accommodate all Year 7 students, marking the official transition to the two-tier system.
Chambers expressed optimism about the new system, saying, “I believe this outcome will provide every child in the Pershore area with a clear and transparent educational journey, and I am confident that this is the right direction for our community.”
