Sergio Garcia, a prominent player in LIV Golf, is making moves to rejoin the DP World Tour in 2025, potentially setting the stage for his 11th Ryder Cup appearance—a milestone that would tie the record for most appearances by a European golfer.
Resignation and Return
The 44-year-old Spaniard, who famously won the 2017 Masters, stepped away from the DP World Tour in 2023 after receiving sanctions for joining the LIV Golf series in 2022.
A DP World Tour representative confirmed that Garcia recently applied to regain his membership and has resolved his financial penalties.
“Sergio Garcia submitted his application to return to membership of the DP World Tour for the 2025 season ahead of the deadline on Sunday, November 17,” the spokesperson said. “He has paid his fines and will now need to serve his suspensions before competing on the DP World Tour.”
Financial Penalties
While the exact details of the sanctions remain undisclosed, Reuters reported Garcia’s fines exceeded $1.06 million.
Ryder Cup Legacy
Garcia has left an indelible mark on Ryder Cup history, holding the record for the most points scored in the competition. Since his debut in 1999, he has participated in 10 Ryder Cups, contributing to six European victories.
If he plays in the 2025 Ryder Cup, Garcia will tie Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood for the most appearances by a European player at 11. The all-time record for Ryder Cup appearances—12—is held by American golfer Phil Mickelson.
Garcia’s choice to join LIV Golf in 2022 made him ineligible for last year’s Ryder Cup, where Europe claimed victory.
The 2025 Ryder Cup
The next Ryder Cup is set to take place in September 2025 at Bethpage, New York. Garcia’s potential return to the competition would not only bolster Europe’s team but also further cement his legacy as one of the Ryder Cup’s greatest contributors.
