Apple CarPlay Ultra First Look: It Takes Over the Entire Dashboard
Next-Gen CarPlay Is Finally Here
Apple has officially launched CarPlay Ultra, the upgraded version of its in-car infotainment system. After being teased in 2022, this new version is no longer a concept. It’s real, and it’s redefining the driving experience.
A New Layer Over Automaker Software
CarPlay Ultra doesn’t replace your car’s software. Instead, it sits over it. Think of it as a visual skin that uses your car’s data but renders it in Apple’s signature design.
It extends beyond the central infotainment display to every screen in the vehicle—even the instrument cluster.
Full Dashboard Control
CarPlay Ultra takes over the digital instrument cluster with sleek, customizable layouts. These include minimalist gauges, full-screen Apple Maps, and more. You can choose colors and background wallpapers too.
The result? A dashboard that looks and feels like your iPhone.
Climate, Radio, and More Inside CarPlay
With Ultra, you no longer need to exit CarPlay to control your car’s settings. New Climate and Radio apps are built into the system.
Tapping them brings up Apple-designed interfaces for HVAC, media, and more. Automaker software is now optional—no more jumping back and forth.
Widgets and a Familiar Dock
CarPlay Ultra also introduces a new dock layout, just like on a Mac. You can keep four apps at the bottom of your screen and swipe to access widgets like weather, reminders, and calendar events.
It feels fast, fluid, and familiar.
Fast Loading and Full Integration
CarPlay Ultra starts instantly, even before your iPhone connects. The software runs on the vehicle but pulls data from your phone. Your privacy is still protected by Apple.
It’s also wireless by default, though you can still plug in for charging or quick setup.
Siri Is Smarter (But Not All-Knowing)
Siri has more control inside Ultra. You can ask it to adjust climate, change music, or set navigation. However, it doesn’t yet understand your specific car or its manual. Apple hints you can ask Siri to “ask ChatGPT” for deeper vehicle questions.
Compatible Automakers and Devices
CarPlay Ultra is debuting on 2025 Aston Martins and will expand to Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Porsche, and more.
It works on iPhone 12 or newer with iOS 18.4.
For some 2024 models, like Aston Martin, a dealer-installed update can enable Ultra.
You’re in CarPlay—Always
Once inside CarPlay Ultra, there’s no need—or easy way—to exit. Even if some automaker-specific features remain, they launch within CarPlay.
You’re always in Apple’s world unless you manually switch back.
Final Thoughts
Apple CarPlay Ultra changes how we use cars. It gives a seamless, elegant, and powerful interface that puts Apple in the driver’s seat—without building a car.
